Skin Antiseptics

The aim of skin disinfection is the greatest possible reduction of the microbial load on the skin flora prior to invasive surgeries in which the skin barrier is compromised. An ideal skin antiseptic has the properties of rapid, prolonged & broad-spectrum activity against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores. Also, it must have good residual effect to suppress rebound growth and have excellent skin tolerance.

Sanmedin® 5%

Topical Microbicidal Solution

Composition:
Each 100 gms contains:
Povidone-Iodine IP – 5% w/v
(Equivalent to Available Iodine 0.5% w/v)
Purified water – Q.S.

Mechanisms of Action:

The antimicrobial action of Povidone-iodine occurs after iodine disassociates from the complex. On contact with tissue Povidone-iodine releases free iodine. In the free form, iodine rapidly penetrates microbial (Pathogen) cell membranes and oxidizes the pathogenic structures (proteins, nucleotides, and fatty acids) in the cytoplasm and cytoplasmic membrane. Free iodine also breaks DNA & RNA strands of the pathogens hence there is no development of resistance against PVP iodine formulations, Due to this interaction it ultimately results in rapid cell death. Then the dead cells are engulfed by phagocytes.

Salient Features:

  • Broad spectrum antimicrobial activity.
  • No skin irritation.
  • Excellent skin spread.
  • Appropriate viscosity.
  • No hard stains.

Applications & Directions for Use:

Applications Directions of Use
Pre-operative skin antisepsis in minor/low-risk surgeries (5%), ophthalmic procedures (5%). Use undiluted.
Prophylactic casualty procedures against infections of burns, lacerations and abrasion. Apply directly to skin using a gauze/sponge.
Protective antiseptic film under wound dressings and bandages. Should not be mixed with any other solution.
Post-operative wound treatment. Let the solution dry before wound dressing.

Available packs: Sanmedin® 5% – 100 ml & 500 ml

Sanmedin® 10%

Topical Microbicidal Solution

Composition:

Each 100 gms contains:
Povidone-Iodine IP – 10% w/v
(Equivalent to Available Iodine 0.10% w/v)
Purified water – Q.S.

Sanmedin®

Topical Microbicidal Solution

Sanmedin® (7.5% w/v) is a cleanser that contains povidone-iodine as the active ingredient. Sanmedin® is effective against a wide variety of pathogenic microbes.

Composition:

Povidone Iodine IP – 7.5 % (w/v)
Purified water IP – Q.S.

Applications:

Surgical hand scrub:

  • Wet hands with water.
  • Spread about 5 ml of scrub over both hands and forearms.
  • Without adding more water, scrub thoroughly for 2.5 to 3 minutes. Use a sponge if desired.
  • Clean thoroughly under fingernails. Add a little water and develop copious suds. Rinse thoroughly under running water.
  • Repeat the entire procedure using another 5 ml of scrub.

Antiseptic hand wash:

  • Wet hands with water and pour about 5 ml of scrub on hands.
  • Rub hands vigorously together for at least 15 seconds, covering all surfaces.
  • Rinse, and dry with a disposable towel.

Patient preoperative skin preparation:

  • Single use only. Single use may prevent extrinsic contamination.
  • Wet skin with water. Apply scrub (1 ml is sufficient to cover an area of 20-30 square inches); develop lather and scrub thoroughly for about 5 minutes.)

XEPITM Skin Prep

Rapid & persistent-pre and post surgical skin antisepsis

Composition:

Chlorhexidine Gluconate – 2 % w/v
(Eq. to Chlorhexidine Gluconate Solution IP – 10 % v/v)
Isopropyl Alcohol IP – 70% v/v
Purified Water IP – Q.S
With emollient and moisturizers

Mechanisms of Action:

XEPITM Skin Prep acts on microorganisms by dual action on Microorganisms

  • CHG elicits both bacteriostatic and bactericidal activities based on the concentration. The efficacy of CHG as a suitable agent against microbe lies in its ability to disrupt the microbial cell wall. As a result of which the ATP- nucleic acid leaks out. CHG interacts with phosphate group of microbial cells which in turn affects the osmotic equilibrium. Hence causing cell death.
  • Proteins are common to all living things but if it loses its shape it becomes nonfunctional and is unable to restore its original shape and functionality. Alcohol breaks the hydrogen bonds in the proteins and denatures the cells. Ethanol also dissolves their lipids and is effective against most bacteria, fungi & many viruses.

Salient Features:

  • Has residual effect throughout the procedure.
  • Used to clean the site prior to CVC insertion and also the maintenance of catheters.
  • Ensures rapid healing of skin after surgery.
  • XEPITM Skin Prep does not more than one wet swab; highly economical for preparation of surgical skin.
  • XEPITM Skin Prep solution conforms to Centers of Disease Control and Prevention(CDC), Association of peri Operative Registered Nurses (AORN) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines for skin preparation and is clinically proven to be effective with a single application, is non-toxic to skin.
  • Persistent activity for 6 hours.
  • Suppresses bacterial re-growth for 72 hours.
