Povidone Iodine 5% and 10% Topical Microbicide
Mechanism of action:
Sanmedin® releases iodine from its complex and produces antiseptic actions. Iodine has strong oxidizing effect on amino acids, nucleotides, and fatty acids. Interaction of iodine with these groups in a cell results in disintegration of the cytoplasm, enzyme denaturation, loss of integrity in the bacterial cell membrane and fungal cell wall. This will lead to destruction of microbial protein and DNA &finally kill the microbes.
Sanmedin® is poorly absorbed through intact skin but absorption is enhanced through denuded skin. Povidone Iodine complex releases iodine on contact with skin or mucous membrane .The activity is thought to be due to the oxidizing properties of free molecular iodine and may also be due to the combination of free iodine with cell protein.
Onset of action: Immediate
Features & Benefits:
Hygienic skin and mucous membrane disinfection:
Sanmedin® is intended for application to the skin before injections, taking blood samples, punctures and minor surgery. Sanmedin® is used undiluted. Paint Sanmedin® on to the skin areas to be disinfected until they are completely wet. Allow to take effect for one minute.
Pre-operative cleansing and disinfection
- Prepare the surgical site by washing with sterile Sanmedin® saturated swab.
- For septic surgery, first disinfect the site of planned incision and then the neighboring skin areas
- For septic operative procedures, begin disinfection at the periphery.
The surgical site must be disinfected at least twice. Allow to take effect for at least five minutes. Incision foils may only be applied after drying.
Post - operative wound treatment
After the wound has been closed and any incision foil removed, clean the suture and surrounding skin areas with a sterile Sanmedin® saturated swab. Depending on the type of dressing, cover the wound while the skin is still moist or, if adhesion is necessary, after the skin has dried.
Next to hand disinfection, skin antisepsis is most important measure for the prevention of infection. Its aim is to reduce the total skin flora as far as possible. On the healthy skin natural bacterial colonization forms a physiological defense system against foreign organisms. In addition, contact organisms can colonize the skin, spread via the hands and then cause infections.
Both the actually harmless resident flora and the transient flora can cause infections. Whenever the skin is damaged either by chance or intentionally, as a result of an operation, there is the danger that pathogenic organisms can penetrate into organism free tissue or into organism free organs. Even with simple infections, organisms from the surface of the skin can be carried with the puncture cylinder into deep seated layers.
Areas of application:
For pre and post operative skin disinfection, for disinfection of mucous membrane and damaged skin (decubitus and ulcer cruris, surface wounds and burns
Is Sanmedin® effective against MRSA?
There is substantial in vitro evidence demonstrating that Sanmedin® (PVP-I) is a highly effective and broad spectrum antimicrobial. Activity has been demonstrated against both common bacterial wound isolates* and antibiotic resistant species**. It was observed that more than 99% of Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) cells were killed within 10 seconds of exposure to Sanmedin®***
